Tonight were the auditions for West Side Story, which I'd agreed to do because the choreographer for Christmas Carol told me that I ought to--I'd make a great Krupke. It had been years since I'd seen the play, and even longer since I'd seen the movie, and I'd forgotten what Krupke's particular character trait is, confusing him with Lieutenant Schrank, the racist, tough-guy detective. Krupke, as it turns out, is practically mute, and fat--a thick-headed moose of a man, with few social or other graces beyond the one-dimensional stereotype of the heavy. Frankly, I expected more from the choreographer, although I can see an attitude like that from the director, who was the inspiration for Val ("Dance 10 Looks 3") in A Chorus Line, who has a reputation for casting folks based primarily on their weight, ignoring things like acting or singing ability (hence the need a year and a half ago for pit singers in Cats).

Also, the other major theatrical player in town, Playhouse on the Square, announced their final show of the season would be The Producers and that the male leads were already cast, which leaves chorus parts--or would if those weren't going to be filled with interns.
