I'm not sure, I think there was a fair bit of coded language there. A lot of it was just a (desperate?) plea to Christians to vote for him despite his being a Mormon. The "religion being eliminated from the public sphere" bit is smoke and mirrors. There is no STATE pressure to eliminate religion from the public sphere, though local officials sometimes act as if there is.
