It's quickly becoming a pee-for-all.
Jun. 24th, 2006 08:44 amWe caught opening night of Urinetown at Playhouse on the Square last night. I was familiar with the show, having bought the soundtrack way back in the day, but I was unprepared for the degree of physical comedy in the production.
I am perhaps the world's worst audience member: I sat stone-faced through Avenue Q on Broadway, and as a theatre person I'm generally far too busy disassembling the craft of the performances in my head to lose myself in enjoying a play. I lost it last night.
It might be fun to think that it was the Fiddler in-jokes from the cast members who's just come off that show, but I'd lost it waaaay before that happened. Nope--it's just that the show was great. Great. Every double-take, every pratfall, every comedy beat was exquisitely timed and perfectly executed. More so than the last couple of shows I've seen on Broadway, where I got the distinct impression that they were running through the set changes in order for the tourists so they could get to whatever they were doing afterwards.
If anyone's looking for a weekend getaway from St. Louis or New Orleans or such, it's a great way to spend a Friday or Saturday evening.
