After much nagging and the laying of guilt trips, I agreed to fix Amy's brakes this weekend, which required ordering parts from NAPA and AutoZone as she drives a relative exotic eponymously named automobile. Fortunately, rotors and pads for all for wheels only ended up costing about $220.00, which isn't too bad.

Yesterday, Amy called me and said that she was driving home and the car backfired, a puff of white smoke came out (I'm thinking she got the color of the smoke wrong), and the car died. It's still dead, sitting in the garage looking pathetic with its tiny little hood up. This morning I tried to give it an examination and observed the following:

1. No oil to speak of on the dipstick.
2. Oil can only be added to the level of "about a quart low" on the dipstick.
3. Oil added above that level is now on the floor of my garage.
4. The engine will turn over and run under acceleration, but dies at idle speed. Because there's no oil to speak of in the crankcase, I've only done this once. (Fortunately, this car uses synthetic oil)
5. I cannot see the oil filter. The owner's manual doesn't have an engine diagram, because they don't want you changing your own oil.

I'm hoping that somehow the filter has come off, and I can replace the filter, fill the crankcase, and everything will be fine. This is because I'm an idiot, and in denial of what will undoubtedly become thousands of dollars in repair work.
