Oxford and weirdness
Feb. 10th, 2007 08:14 pmWhen I first moved to Memphis eleven years ago, a couple of friends of mine set me up with a relatively nice girl whom I dated for a couple of years before deciding that I didn't really want to move the relationship forward. We broke up, and she took it very badly, to the point where we can't see each other socially even though we share some common friends. I moved on, got married, bought a house, changed jobs a couple of times, and my ex-girlfriend kept a torch burning--or so I've been told.
About two years ago, I heard from a mutual friend that she had a boyfriend. Good for her, I thought, she's needed to move on for a while. Six months ago, I heard that that boyfriend had become a fiancé. Three weeks ago, I ran into them at a play, but kept a respectful distance and didn't speak to either of them--I did overhear her introducing him as her fiancé, though (no, I wasn't eavesdropping). Two weeks ago, after getting back from Hong Kong, my friend Ed tells me that Josh--my ex's fiancé--had broken up with her.
Today is Ed's birthday, and since I was going to Oxford for fun anyway, I invited Ed to come along. Yesterday he sent me a text message asking if Josh could accompany us. While that was weird, I said sure, no problem.
So this morning, I was officially introduced to my ex's ex, who seems nice enough. Needless to say, we didn't lack for a topic of conversation: it seems we were common members of "the rat bastard" club, which, if you spelled it "rat bastarde" could be sung to a well known tune about another club centered around rodentia. Josh had no shortage of opinion on the type of person I was--although fortunately he didn't buy into the tales of my great and overpowering evil. We hit it off pretty well, I think, which is good since he's an employee of the theatre where Amy's putting on Guys and Dolls this summer.
We arrived in Oxford a little after 10 to have brunch at the L&M Kitchen and Salumeria, which was fantastic and relatively inexpensive (it ended up being $43 for the three of us--although dinner prices edge up quite a bit), bought an exceptionally heavy loaf of sourdough at a nearby bakery, and headed to the theater to catch The Animation Show III, which was a lot of fun, even if I had seen a couple of the pieces online previously.
While waiting for the movie to start, the theater showed a looped promo for the film festival, which included as among its sponsors the library at Ole Miss, which is named after a person whose name happens to be an anagram for Josh's and my ex-girlfriend.
Afterward, we hit Square Books, where I picked up a copy of Hints & Pinches, which
snowy_owlet (and anyone else with an affinity for food writing) ought to read one of these days. Then back home, but not before stopping by PC Mart so Ed could buy himself an iPod for his birthday.
