Rehearsal got out a little early for Shrew, and Mrs. Cwabs said she'd be out partying like a grown adult, and various dropped hints indicated that we'd have company this weekend, so I decided I'd catch the late show of 3:10 to Yuma, which is really good up until the end where it turns stupid. But that's not really what this post is about--this post is about what was showing across the hall from 3:10 to Yuma:

One of the minor disappointments of iPhone ownership has been its inability to play the CAT TOWN THEME SONG when certain people call. It was cool, being able to hit send folks to the ringtone page for all both their ringtone needs, and cooler, in a kinda weird way, when people would look at you funny when your phone would suddenly sing "DEEDLE DOOT DOOT DE DEE" in the middle of an important meeting, and I've missed that for the past couple of months. (There are apparently more carriers on the Xingtone page, but neither Verizon nor AllTel is available yet--I think Xingtone's gonna lose the market share battle eventually).

In any case, getting the CAT TOWN RINGTONE on an iPhone is, while not ridiculously simple, fairly easy, and doesn't require any seekrit hacks, per se. Naturally, you need the .mp3 of the theme song and iTunes 7.4 (the one that adds ringtones--you can have the CAT TOWN RINGTONE before you can pay Steve Jobs 99 cents to upload one of their copy protected versions!). In iTunes (in Windows), right-click on the themesong file, and select "Convert to AAC." Go to the Music > iTunes > iTunes Music > DEEDLE DOOT DOO DEE DEE > Unknown Album and change the file extension of from .m4a to .m4r (Windows will tell you that your system will never work again if you do this. Ignore it). Double click on the file, and it will play in iTunes. Plug in your iPhone, go to the Ringtones tab, select to sync LET'S ALL GO TO CAT TOWN, sync everything up, and send [livejournal.com profile] derspatchel $0.99, and make sure your iPhone plays that song when he calls.

This technique also works with the rest of your unprotected audio files, although you might need Audacity or something to trim them to under 30 seconds.

EDIT: And the iPhone update just broke it. Curse you, Steve Jobs!
