Ugh.

This afternoon comes the hard part. Quitting my current job, which I like a LOT, but which I don't think is going to be around in a year. The letter's sitting here on my desk, but my boss (whom I also like) isn't in his office. The number of scenarios playing out comes down to basically three:

1. They tell me to get bent, and get out. (unlikely)
2. They tell me that they understand, and wish me luck after I've gone. (also unlikely)
3. They freak. (Actually very likely)

I've experienced 1 and 2 in the past. Option 1 isn't pleasant, but you get over it the first day on your new job and you usually get a couple days off out of it. Option 2 is usually pretty nice, as they'll take you to lunch on your last day, everyone shakes your hand, and so on.

Option 3 I've never seen. I've been told that I'm critical to this project's success, but by a salesman--customarily known for his ass-smoke-blowing abilities. We'll just see.

Boss has just stepped back into his office. Here I go.

Update: Mostly 2. I have a feeling there may be a counteroffer on Monday.

I hope it went really well. As a manager and sometimes owner, I'm a huge proponent of #2 in every case but for actual malfeasance (someone quitting after doing something really, really bad, possibly on purpose).

May your manager feel the same.
