Oh, so much entertainment!
Mar. 19th, 2006 06:19 pmBetween one thing and another, we've gone to see quite a bit this weekend.
First out the gate, Company at Theatre Memphis on Friday night. I actually auditioned for this, but Measure for Measure set up a set of schedule conflicts that couldn't be beat. Even without me, it was a very very good production: acting and singing was all first-rate, although the men in the cast (save Bobby) were all noticeably weaker singers than the women. I'd like to say that this was a sound board issue, but having heard a good deal of the show unmic'd over the past couple of weeks, it was just singers. That said, timing, tuning, and the overall effect of the show were all top-notch, and a couple of the numbers were musically spectacular (no comment on the overall quality of the dancing--although the choreographer's solo number was excellent).
They also announced their season, which I'd been more or less privy to before, but I can officially voice my desire to play both a singing plant and Einstein within the next year and a half.
Saturday afternoon we caught the matinee of V for Vendetta. I'd read the comic, and had heard Alan Moore wanted his name removed from the film, so I was a little worried. I shouldn't have been. They really did a fine job with the adaptation; yes, they cut a bunch, made the ending a little more pat and climactic, but all things being equal they put together one of the better movies I've seen in a while. The politics are simplistic and idealized, but complex politics don't translate well at 24 frames a second.
Saturday night we used our comps for Saucy Jack and The Space Vixens at Circuit Playhouse. God bless 'em, they gave it their all, and even plied the audience with liquor, but there's limit to what any cast can do with exceedingly dull source material. A day later and I can't tell you one song from the show--compare that with Rocky Horror, where it takes just a few bars from nearly any song in the show to get a theatre major singing. Other folks seemed to like it, though--maybe it's just me.
