Neven Mrgan over at You Look Nice Today took a tag of Merlin Mann singing from the end of the show, and looped it into a ringtone. I downloaded it and it worked fine on the iPhone, which meant that once again the theme to CAT TOWN could be used, as well.

So--if you have an iPhone, and if you want it the CAT TOWN RINGTONE is available here. Just download and drop it into iTunes.

If you don't have an iPhone, but instead have something else with internet access, in the US (and maybe Canada) and your provider doesn't completely suck, you can still get it here. It's free, and they ask for an email address but you can put in whatever you want because they don't check it. This isn't new, but you might have gotten a new phone over the last year and forgotten it was available or something.

I also remixed the ylnt ringtone with "Tighten Up" as a learning experiment with Audacity, available as an mp3 or as an m4r.

How does one turn <random mp3> into a ringtone for the iPhone? I'd be very interested in being able to do this...

These instructions are for Windows--on a Mac you'd probably use GarageBand and it would all be automated.

1. Make sure it's actually an mp3, and not something you downloaded from iTunes.
2. Use Audacity (or something else if you prefer) to clip out a section < 30 seconds long. Export this as an mp3.
3. Open the mp3 in iTunes.
4. Right click on the 30-second bit, and select "Convert Selection to AAC"
5. Find the $FILENAME.m4a file on your hard drive (probably under "iTunes music" and the artist).
6. Rename the file to $FILENAME.m4r
7. Double click or drag the file into iTunes.
8. Check the "Ringtones" area of your library--it should be there.
9. Sync and go!

For mine I've taken care of steps 1-6, so you only have to put the files into iTunes and Sync.

Thanks. Yeah, I've got a Mac, but I don't know that I've ever even opened up GarageBand. So I think that makes that the opposite of "automated"...

In that case, you probably aren't really that interested.

Well, I'm always interested in learning something new, and it'd be a nice skill to have...
