Memory Map

For those of you not reading elsewhere, yesterday I created a map of my first twenty-four years, give or take. It's still a work in progress, but was a lot of fun to make--a little wistful, a little cathartic, and a lot of what makes me who I am.

I recommend making your own, whether you share it with the rest of us or not. It's a useful way to document your existence, and a novel way to bring a sense of narrative to your life.

The cartography of my life isn't in any particular order--outside of the order I entered 'em, but I'll arrange it to give it some flow and narrative when I've got a few more entries in.

That looks daunting.

Neat. How long did it take you to do that?

Really only about as long as it took to write everything. The map does all the work, as long as you're capable of finding things on a map (either by hand for woods and baseball parks, or by googling street addresses for homes etc.) I think I did most of it between 10 and midnight last night.

I started mine! There's a lot more to put down, but I added the basic stuff like homes, schools, jobs...

Start by clicking "My Maps" Then create a new one.

You'll need some sort of account, of course. I don't know if you have one set up with Google or not.

My life as a map would make about as much sense and be just as edifying as the career of a quantum particle, and I'm even superstitious that observing it would alter the outcome.
