I'm not a huge Leonard Cohen fan. A lot of his original stuff gets over-synthesized, and he's not a strong singer on top of that. When his stuff gets covered well, however it's exceptional. Witness Jeff Buckley's cover of "Hallelujah," or Concrete Blonde's cover of "Everybody Knows."

The point is that Jonathan Coulton's cover of "Famous Blue Raincoat" rivals Tori Amos'. It may even surpass it in terms of pathos.

Forget Buckley. Rufus' is the superior cover.

You only say that because of the music video featuring one of my ex-grilfriends, i.e. Shrek. Which, incidentally, is the reason I don't prefer that otherwise perfectly respectable cover of the song.

I also downloaded a version of it from Amazon by some lady whom I can't remember at the moment. It was okay.

Oh. Wow. That is the Rufus version.

I saw that film a bazillion times, but I was always too busy taking care of a room full of 5 year olds to actually pay attention. I'm gonna have to sit down and watch it "alone" sometime.
