I'll admit I'm a little behind the curve on my Islam, and I'm not wondering what the uproar is about--I've seen the cartoons in question--but I am wondering if the edict forbidding depictions of Mohammed is something that Mohammed himself instructed or if it was something created by a later cleric, much like the Seven Deadly Sins (among LOTS of other stuff) in Christianity?

A few disclaimers: I'm a practicing Christian who is disturbed that many many other people who share my religion believe that the fundamental tenet of Christianity is "bomb abortion clinics" or "God hates homosexuals" rather than "love thy neighbor." I believe that the Bible is full of truth, but I also understand that it was both written and edited by men, who are by nature fallible.

Which is the nice thing about having four gospels: it provides a little corroborating testimony.

Back to the question: is the whole "no pictures of the Prophet" thing an extension of the "no graven images" thing in the Judeo-Christian tradition? (I might note that this is conveniently ignored by most Christian churches, including my own).

And, more importantly, why haven't any American editorial cartoonists taken the bait? I can understand a certain desire for some not to make an offensive or racially insensitive remark, but what about that guy who draws the hard right duck? He certainly has no problems ignoring the death of hundreds in Katrina and then race-baiting the debate afterward.

Anyone?
