There's not really a tasteful way to put this, but it is worthy of mention, so here goes:

My daughter's English teacher was murdered over the Thanksgiving holiday. Her husband has been arrested on first-degree murder charges. Because I don't know much about physiology, I wonder just how violent an argument has to become to end in someone being beaten to death, or what would incite such an act of violence.

Likewise, I cannot begin to imagine what it's like to lose someone close to me in such a grotesque manner. Still, I go to church with a lot of these kids, they hang out at my house occasionally, we have short and polite conversations, although I'd be hard pressed to recognize more than a handful of my daughter's friends.

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected. It certainly doesn't make for an appropriate Thanksgiving.

Unfortunately -- and I don't mean this as any kind of excuse, just an observation -- the problem is likely that communication never worked at all in the first place. When I've seen men get really violent (and women, too, for that matter) when they don't have the ability to communicate what they're feeling, what they want, when they can't seem to even understand how they're feeling and their fear has been transformed into anger. It's like when they start hitting there's this weird "THIS is what I mean, can't you understand me, THIS, THIS, THIS." It's really sad.

As hippie as it sounds, we really need to have some kind of emotional communication and compassion education for kids, starting with really young kids. There'd be one heck of a lot less screaming and violence.

I hadn't heard of Meryl Runion until now, but having looked into her now, I'm impressed. And you really seem to have taken it to heart! :) Very cool.

What on earth. Sir, I'm doing what must pass as praying that you and yours might have a better Christmas than you did a Thanksgiving. Fate has no table manners.
