My coworker's eight-year-old recently had a school project about the food chain, and he brought in the results of the project to share with us. It was enlightening enough to share with you.
The first step of the food chain is plants, which get theri energy from photosynthesis and dirt:

Next, caterpillars eat the plants,

Then, birds eat the caterpillars,

After that, cats eat the birds,

And as any cartoon worth its salt will show you, dogs eat the cats,

And finally...

I don't think I can add any more knowledge to this presentation.
