Since we went to the movies last night instead of the New Years Eve Party, I have an update to The Best Movies of 2006.
Dreamgirls is probably Eddie Murphy's best performance ever, and Jamie Foxx's worst. All the singing is great (save Foxx, who really does appear to be phoning it in--IMDb reports that Foxx wanted more money than he ended up receiving, and his half-assed performance might reflect that), the costume and set design are spectacular (there's a neat bit on concept sketches vs. final designs during the closing credits), and the Beyonce/Deena--Diana Ross photographs pasted throughout the second half of the movie are eerie in their verisimilitude. Also, seeing it in a theater gives you the opportunity to enjoy spontaneous audience applause, something that normally happens only during movies with large numbers of either movie geeks (Casablanca), Star Wars geeks (Star Wars), or ordinary geeks (Any movie shown at midnight on the Georgia Tech campus) in attendance.
