Because Memphis doesn't book Broadway touring shows without some washed-up actor in them (Molly Ringwald in Sweet Charity? Robert Goulet as Arthur this time in Camelot? John Davidson in Oklahoma?), I picked up tickets to see The 25th Annual Putnam Country Spelling Bee in Nashville on March 10. I've had the soundtrack for a while, but unlike a lot of other soundtracks it really doesn't do much in the way of explaining a plot, so I have NO idea what happens for once, beyond the basic setup.
I'm engaging in a little hyperbole with what Memphis books. They are bringing in Spamalot next month, but I can't really justify spending $150 to see it again, having been underimpressed with the show in New York a couple of years ago (it's cute, but once is enough). They're also bringing back The Lion King, which was so compelling when we saw it the last time it came through town that my grandma asked if it was over at intermission. Then again, my daughter asked if Les Miserables was over during intermission, as well, so that statement is hardly a basis for comparison ("Of course it's not over! The little boy hasn't been shot several times in an emotionally manipulative manner! The nice policeman hasn't killed himself rather than tempering his justice with a degree of mercy!").
Anyhoo, Spelling Bee. Kinda exciting.
