After work last yesterday I headed downtown to spend a little time with [livejournal.com profile] tenlegspider and [livejournal.com profile] mcduff as they had stopped in town for a couple of nights on their way from New Orleans to Chicago (on the train they call the City of New Orleans, incidentally). I caught up with them on Beale Street, then we went to Sawaddi for less-than-spicy Thai (there's spicier food to be found in Memphis, I promise), then to Dan McGuinness for a drink or two, where I surreptitiously snapped this photo:

The thing that looks like the great outdoors behind them is, sadly, a shopping mall.

Topics of discussion:

  • Superpowers
  • The treble on the guitar
  • Sports, and the high cost of tickets
  • Various definitions of "praline"
  • The hours at Cafe du Monde
  • The couch that gave weed
  • Crappy American beer, and the light variants thereof
  • The murder rate
  • [livejournal.com profile] redtheblue's suggestion that I take them to Carruthersville MO for a real American race riot
  • People we have in common
  • Grits
  • The concept of vegetarianism w.r.t Memphis cuisine
  • Cake pony
  • Other, equally scintillating topics

Amy showed up at 10 after going to see The Vagina Monologues or The Cooter Conversations or whatever it is we're supposed to call it now that "vagina" has become a word-you're-not-allowed-to-say-at-least-in-Florida, proving that she is not a product of my imagination. At the beginning of the evening tenlegspider had mentioned the need to not go out drinking until the wee hours, and I'm afraid we mostly failed to follow up on that suggestion. Maybe they got enough sleep to see something today. I had a lovely time in any case, and I highly recommend catching them on their North American tour.

I could have happily gone the rest of my life without needing to know about the existence of Cake pony. I'm scarred (and scared) now. Scarred, I tell you.

Well, it followed naturally from inflatablegayunicorns.com, which was under the "other topics discussed" bit.

Nothing surprises me any more. Even inflatable gay unicorns.

Ah yes. They did tell you what the unicorn's name was, right?

They may have overlooked it, or I may have not caught it when they did. In either case, I don't know it.

Let's just say that it was named in honour of a certain Cuban bruncher.
