Early yesterday morning (like 4am) a coworker was supposed to meet another coworker to fly to Chicago, and due to getting lines of communication crossed, one coworker was dropped off here at work and the other drove his car to the airport, which meant that the first coworker didn't have any way of getting to the airport.

So coworker 1, being a devoted employee with no other recourse, decided to walk. It's about a two-mile hike from our office to the airport, which you could probably still make in under an hour dodging traffic and getting your bearings straight. I don't think he quite had an hour, though, so he was a little concerned about missing his flight. As he approached the airport perimeter, he saw a potential shortcut that he thought would shave some time from his journey: he threw his bag over the perimeter fence at the airport, laid his coat on top of the barbed wire, and jumped the fence. Then he had to dodge a plane taxiing out from the FedEx hub getting ready for takeoff, as he was crossing the tarmac. He jumped the fence on the other side of his corner cut (ripping his pants in the process) and made his way to the terminal, where he arrived five minutes too late for his flight, so he called someone and came back to the office.

I took him to the airport for his rescheduled later flight. I'm sure the TSA officals made him remove his shoes and that he wasn't allowed to bring a bottle of water through security.

Um, no offense, I'm sure he's a lovely person, but your coworker's a total moron.

Well, yeah. I've never worked anywhere where we didn't have at least one total moron on staff. My last job had a guy who brought ammunition through security and didn't get caught until he changed planes in SFO.

He's lucky airport security didn't see him and shoot him while going over the operimeter fence.

Please. This is Memphis. We're the weak link in the security chain.

Walkin in L A
Walkin in L A . . .
Nobody walks in L A

You know, there's a very strong chance that coworker 1 has never ridden in a taxi in his life. It's not a solution that immediately springs to my mind either, as a taxi is something you might see once a month in Memphis--which means it could take longer to wait for a taxi to be dispatched at 4am than it would take to simply walk the distance.

I was in Memphis for two days and didn't notice a taxi shortage when we went to Graceland. Are they only allowed in cantral Memphis and Graceland?

There's a bit of a difference between catching a cab at the Peabody or Graceland, and picking one up in a neighborhood where it can take an hour to get a cop. Especially at 4am. He could have literally waited two hours for the cab, if it came at all. In spite of cabs being two miles away at the airport.
